Gavilan’s Ricardo Bustamante signs with Nelson University

GILROY – Gavilan College men's soccer standout goalkeeper Ricardo Bustamante has signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Nelson University Arizona. The announcement was made by Rams' head coach Ivan Bastida.

"I'm incredibly proud of all the hard work he's put in during his time at Gavilan College and it's been an honor to coach him," said Bastida. "It's a testament to his dedication and drive that he's taking the next step in his soccer career and education. I have no doubt that Ricardo will continue to make us proud, succeed at Nelson, and inspire future generations of athletes."

Bustamante was a first-team All-Coast Conference North Division selection during his sophomore season this past fall. Over 17 games, the Christopher High School alum posted a 2.96 goals against average and recorded two shutouts.

Bustamante is excited to continue on to the next level despite leaving home.

"Making this decision was tough, but it was the biggest one I've ever made," Bustamante said.
I know it means I won't have my family and friends close by, but I'm super excited about what the future holds. Moving to another state to keep playing soccer, and the best part is, I'll be continuing my career and finishing school on a scholarship."

Nelson University is located in Phoenix, Arizona. The Warriors compete in the South Western State Intercollegiate Conference as a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Bustamante will suit up for new Nelson men's soccer head coach Barry Swartz.
