
Gavilan College names Ivan Bastida new men’s soccer head coach
Gavilan College Director of Athletics Jamie Adams has announced the hiring of Ivan Bastida as the Rams' new men's soccer head coach for the upcoming fall 2024 season.
"I am thrilled to welcome Ivan Bastida as the new head coach of the Gavilan Rams men's soccer team," said Adams. "Ivan was selected for his exceptional leadership, extensive experience, and proven ability to foster both individual and team growth. His commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes and his strategic approach to coaching make him an invaluable asset to our program."
Bastida, a former California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) student-athlete, comes to Gilroy after serving as an assistant coach the past two years at Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) in Summit, Miss.
"I am honored to be named head coach of the Gavilan College men's soccer team," said Bastida. "As a former 3C2A student-athlete, it is a dream come true to return to the competitive community colleges in California. I am profoundly grateful to President Dr. Avila and Athletic Director Jamie Adams for their trust and commitment to the program's future. I am excited to grow the sport in the community and help our student-athletes. Go Rams!"
During the 2023 season, Bastida helped lead SMCC to its first postseason appearance in five years.
Originally from Southern California, Bastida has an extensive coaching background and has managed teams of all ages. He coached multiple club teams with Pateadores SC, a youth organization focused on player development. He coached at the high school level for five years, with stints at University (Irvine, CA) and Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, CA), where every year each of his teams won their respective league titles. He also worked with the men's club team at Cal State Fullerton where they reached their first conference championship match in school history.
Bastida was also the Head Coach for Anaheim Legacy FC, a men's United Premiere Soccer League (UPSL) team. In the spring of 2022, Anaheim Legacy FC was crowned conference champions and promoted to the premier division of the UPSL. He led the team to a record of 21-5-1 during his tenure with the club.
Bastida went through each step of the education ladder. It began when he played for Santa Ana College where he received Defensive MVP and Rookie MVP honors in a run that took the team to the Final Four of the CCCAA. After finishing his associate degree, he transferred to California State University Fullerton and completed his bachelor's degree in kinesiology. He obtained his master's degree in coaching and exercise science from Concordia University-Irvine in 2021.
Bastida is currently working on obtaining his USSF 'B' License, and holds multiple diplomas with United Soccer Coaches.
A native of Anaheim, Bastida attended Katella High School where he attained his biliteracy seal on his diploma for being a bilingual speaker. He was also named team captain and received OCADA "Character of Honor Athlete" award.
