Gavilan names alum Joffre Longoria new football head coach

GILROY – Gavilan College Director of Athletics Jamie Adams has announced the hiring of Joffre Longoria as the new head coach of the Rams’ football program. Longoria, a Gilroy native and former Gavilan football student-athlete, began his first day in the position today.

In his role, Longoria will also serve as the manager of the RAMS Athletic Academic Mentorship Program (RAAMP).

Adams said Longoria emerged on top from a strong field of candidates. His connection to Gilroy and the Gavilan community made him stand out from the rest.

“It was pretty obvious, his commitment to student-athletes, to Gavilan, and to the community,” Adams said. “He's already been a part of our Ram Fam — and still is, because we're all Ram Fam for life.”

Longoria, a Gilroy High School graduate, played for two seasons at Gavilan from 1995-96 and went into coaching shortly after. He brings extensive coaching experience at various levels. Longoria has coached at Gilroy, Christopher, and Andrew Hill (San Jose) high schools, coached for three semi-professional teams, and was most recently at San Jose City College.

Longoria replaces long-time Gavilan head coach John Lango, who stepped down after the 2024 season. Lango, who was head coach at Gilroy High School prior to his arrival at Gavilan, coached Longoria during his junior and senior seasons.

Longoria and the Rams will make their 2025 season debut on August 30 at home when Gavilan hosts College of the Siskiyous at 1p.m.
